  • The 7th edition of the International Experimental Engraving Biennial (IEEB7) with the concept Fabricated Histories. Fact and Fiction in Recent History presents the art installation by Sorin Oncu “The Motto of Deception LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ”.

Opening: Friday, 28th October 2016, Cărturești Carusel (55 Lipscani str.)
    Exhibition period: 25th October – 24th November 2016

Organized by Experimental Project. An event promoted by Aiurart

“Influenced by the recent sociopolitical contexts which highlight the war in Syria, the waves of refugees and the constant association of terrorism with the Arab world and Muslim religion, Sorin Oncu, artist of Serbian origin established in Timisoara, Romania, having regular links with France on personal basis, decants the harsh reality and reacts cynically. The French revolutionary ideal included in a slogan with global implications carries the meaning one finds in the first article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.” Transferring a European motto into Arabic language can be a trick of historical fabrication, a power transfer where its mechanisms miss the purpose of its own principles.
The installation from IEEB7 was carried out following the artist’s concept and the original draft. Sorin Oncu died unexpectedly in the summer of 2016. Our thanks go to Cosmin Haiaş, artist and friend.”  Olivia Nițiș
